Overview
Important!
Google recommends using the Global Site Tag (gtag.js) to add a DoubleClick tag to the site but you can always use the legacy implantation method which will use the older way (but still perfectly valid and working) method. This article will outline the recommended approach of using the Global Site Tag version.
Floodlight is an optional feature in DoubleClick Campaign Manager (DCM). It allows advertisers to capture reports on visitors to their site who have viewed or clicked one of their ads. Advertisers use Floodlight to determine the effectiveness of their online campaigns in terms of sales and user activity on their site. You can determine monetary value as a direct result of the campaigns or discover how users purchased a product or completed an online form. The information recorded by the Floodlight tag depends on configuration and location on the site.
To create the DoubleClick you will need to create two separate tags - a Global Site Tag that is the base code for the event tag, and the event tag that will fire the pixel to DoubleClick.
Note that the Global Site Tag does not fire any pixel, it is the base code that the other event pixels will work off.
Create the DoubleClick Global Site Tag
Log in to Manage and navigate to Apps. Search for Floodlight and click to configure the Global Site Tag App.
- You first need to configure the Global Site Tag - as the name suggests, this must be present on all pages that you intend to use DoubleClick on. This is a simple base tag that the event tag will be based off. Click Global Tag
Next fill in the boxes with the relevant information from your DoubleClick account. When you have finished then click Continue.
Then you must be sure to place it on every page where you intend to use DoubleClick. Typically this will be global across the site so will be this setup:
Then go through and save the tag in the normal way.
Create the DoubleClick Event Tag
- Next you will need to create the Event tag. This will be the tag that sends the data to DoubleClick.
Search for the same Floodlight tag and click to configure the Global Site Tag App.
Next click the Event. You will need to fill this information in as you want from your DoubleClick account.
Note that the "U" values are under the custom parameters as shown above. When you have finished then click Continue.
You can then apply it to the page(s) you want it to fire on. You also need to make sure that it is dependant on the Global Site Tag we created earlier as otherwise the Global Tag code might not be available and this code will run into an error.
When you have finished just save, commit and publish in the usual way. - When the tag has been published you can verify that the tag is working by checking the network panel for the DoubleClick number you put in to the tag:
